Rolly Uloth President - Rosedale Transport April 2011 Driving for Profit Seminar 'How We Did It' Rolly Uloth has been hard at work since the age of 10. His first position was caretaker of his one room schoolhouse. After completing his first year of studies in Science at St. Francis Xavier University in his hometown of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, he left his studies to pursue greater opportunities. Upon arriving in Ontario in 1965, he was immediately hired by Stelco Steel Company in Hamilton. He quickly moved up in the company and by 1968 Rolly was promoted to be an Environmental Control Specialist at Stelco. For an additional source of income Rolly and his wife Mary, were Superintendents for Rosedale Apartments, which, coincidently, was owned by Rolly's future business partner, Barry Smith. Barry was looking for new business opportunities while employed as a pilot for Air Canada and was impressed by Rolly's excellent work ethic. In 1969, Stelco went on strike and Rolly, having to support a wife and an infant son, went into business together with Barry Smith. They decided to purchase a cartage company, they renamed it Rosedale Transport (which is now part of the Rosedale Group). In the early years, Rosedale Transport was a one-man operation headed up by Rolly. Rolly's new life was one of hard work and perseverance. His time was divided between being on the road, handling the paperwork and invoicing, and doing his own truck repairs. Rolly has maintained to this day, an excellent rapport with all Rosedale's major customers, which is one of his biggest strengths. He is also a tough negotiator, which is critical in staying alive in the trucking business. In addition, he has been able to build a very talented team around him and has learned to let his management team handle the day-to-day operations. |
